Even though may efforts my prove to be in vain that has not weaken my resolve to show why MvC2 should in fact be at Evo 2k10. Jay-z said it best, “Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t” and those words have never been truer than they are today.
Back in November it was reported that MvC2 outsold Street Fighter HDR, a revelation that even caught Capcom Exec’s by surprise. Check out the quote below from Capcom’s VP of strategic planning:
“We have three titles that have drastically over-performed our expectations,” Capcom’s VP of strategic planning and business development Christian Svensson told GamesIndustry.biz. “The most recent of which was Marvel vs Capcom 2, which we didn’t expect to exceed Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix’s numbers, but it has.” Source
But apparently that is not enough. I having been following the SRK forums pretty closely and they have taken a lot of flack from their decision. When somebody brought up the sales numbers of the two games, they were told that high sales numbers do not equal high tournament numbers. That is understandable; yet, it is a good indicator. Not to mention the game has had a resurgence of players since the re-release.
There also has been controversy over the re-release because they are not true arcade ports. Some MvC2 players even said they love the game but would not vote it in for players choice because they would be using the PS3 verison as opposed to the Dreamcast. How do you feel about this? Do you think it should be Dreamcast or bust for Evo? Or can you deal with the PS3 port? I personally can deal with the PS3 but I know many of the top tier players won’t accept it.
