Anakaris is a character we do not see much of in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. He is a mummified pharaoh who came back to life 2000 years after his death to save his people from invaders. In Vampire Savior, we learned that he had moved his people to a hidden world in the center of the earth in order to protect them. Many choose not to play with him because of his lack of speed and inability to take damage like the rest. His cons outweigh his pros but if you like a challenge then this is your character.
Tactics For Play
Although you will most likely get called cheap by some players, as an Anakaris player you need to over use and abuse his Miira Drop (QCP+P) [air]. This is Anakaris’s bread and butter when it comes to building meter. He can build meter faster than anybody in the game and although he can’t really do anything with it, you can switch him out and let one of you stronger characters get their specials off. Think of it how Magneto and Storm players use their characters to build meter then DHC the character out.
You cannot take too many risks at all while playing with Anakaris. With him being as slow as he is and having such terrible jumps, you have to bide your time wisely. Wait for openings to show themselves and do not get baited into deviating from your game plan. Anakaris is not a character you can push like others.
While jumping, be sure to super jump and/or air dash. He has the worst normal jump in the game and just floats around the screen. This leaves him open to a variety of attacks, so your best bet would be to just dash to cover ground.
Supers
Pharaohs Magic
This move gives Dan’s specials a run for its money for the title of “most useless move in the game”. It is slow, has horrible range, and is blockable. This is easily jumped over but if you manage to hit it, it does good damage. The odds of you hitting it in its entirety are slim so try to avoid this one.
Pharaoh Cobra Blow
This move entails Anakaris going inside his coffin and then by pressing punch/kick giant snakes extends then retracts across the screen. Depending on which button you press will decide which snake get sent out. The highest or top snake comes out with LP and bottom snake is HK. The lower middle snake is LK and upper middle snake is HP. To make this effective you need to work on the timing of each of the snakes. You can mash out and land a few hits, but if you take time to learn you can get the most of this special and do some good damage.
Hitsugi No Utage
Like most of his moves, they are usually all or nothing. This move is no different. It all comes down to range with this. If you are too far or too close you will end up wasting a special because it will not execute as planned. Best bet is to corner trap your opponent and use this while standing a small distance away to land the multiple hits from this move.
Pharaoh Illusion
You really need to combo the startup of this move if you intend to use it. One method I have noticed Anakaris users use is to perform his launcher then execute the Pharaoh Illusion. If you fail to combo into this move you leave yourself open for attack which would instantly end the special.
Assist
He does not have the best or most effective assist in the game so you have to make do with what you have. To be honest you would be better off not really using them at all.
- Alpha – Chijou Kougeki Type
This is probably the most useful (and that’s not saying much) assist type. The HP Cobra Blow has a good range, but that is about all it has.
- Gamma – Nage Engo Type
If there were one assist you would want to stay away from it is this one. The Miira Drop is easily telegraphed by your incoming Anakaris, and since it’s a long range attack, it will miss people who are too close or too far away.
- Beta – Hensoku Kougeki Type
If you choose not to use the Alpha assist, then this is the one for you. This will be useful in stopping mid-range to far attacks but that is about it. It does not do much but is still more productive than the Gamma assist.
I am a fan of the “Tricks of the Trade” combo video series so check out the Anakaris chapter below. Hopefully it will get those combo gears churning within you.
So for you brave soles who choose to play with Anakaris I hope you enjoyed my guide. Like always I am taking request for more. If you would like to add anything feel free to do so in the comments!
