Controller vs. Fighting Stick

PS3 Street Fighter IV FightStick

With the recent release of MvC2 on XBL and soon to be PSN there has been alot of talk about what controllers to use and there superiority over one another. I will admit up to about a year ago I was a die-hard Dreamcast controller man (probably had to do with my lack of serious play).

I knew that there were arcade sticks out but always felt I could achieve the same level of play with the Dream cast controller. Now I will not say that switching to an Arcade Stick will give you a certain level of tactical advantage but the larger buttons do have there perks.

After playing on the Dreamcast controller for a good part of my MvC2 life, I decided to try out my friends Tekken 5 Hori Stick. At first I will admit that I was trash on it and hated it, but after some time of learning the controls and getting used to the setup I became a far better fighter than I was on the Dreamcast controller.

Magic series became much easier to do as well as one of, if not my favorite move in the game: The Raging Demon! With that alone I was sold on the arcade sick. I realized that to be truly good at this game I would need to be able to fight on ANY type of controller or machine whether that be in the comforts of my own home or at a local arcade. This became blatently apparent at EVO North where during the second match I was un-able to use my Hori Stick and had to fight on the machine.

Well fast forward to today, I gave the Hori stick back to my friend and finally purchased my own. Which one you may wonder, well I grabbed the Street Fighter 4 Arcade Fighting Stick (which is actually being advertised to the right of this post.) Now since my Xbox power cord crapped out on me and it is near impossible to find a 3 prong power brick without ordering online I have been forced to use my brand new stick only on the PS3 6 character demo.

Now although this is not how I wanted to break in my new stick it is what I have to deal with and so far I am in love! The first thing that I noticed was the stylish graphics and slanted bottom for your wrist to sit comfortably during play. Comfort always seemed to be an issue with my Hori stick but does not seem to be an issue here. It has an 8 button setup simliar to my Hori stick just the button are placed a bit differently.

This has posed a slight problem during play simply because I am used to the Hori setup. On my Hori stick, the triggers are located to to the right and left of the standard punches and kicks yet on my new stick they are both placed on the right. I am a bit happy to have to wait a week for the PSN drop because I would be heart broken if I got on XBL and lost simply because I was not used to my sticks button configuration.

Other than that I have nothing negative to say about my purchase of this stick. It functions just as good if not better than any other stick I have come in contact with and has better graphics than I am used to. One day I hope to get a custom Byrdo or Big Pockets Stick (that will be the day) but until then this stick will be more than enough to handle my gaming needs.

If you are interested in checking out the stick, its cost $72.oo new from Amazon and you can check out the stick below.
